Add your list (optional)

One address for every label needs no list: type it in step 2 and the sheet fills. Add a list only to print different addresses.

Read inside this browser tab. Your file is never uploaded.

Arrange the label

Each line here is a line on the label. Click a column name to insert it, or type any text you want printed. A line whose columns are all empty for a row is left out, so the rest close up.

Labels printing a little off?

First print the blank template on plain paper at actual size and check the usual causes. If every label is off by the same amount, move them back here. A minus sign moves left or up. Saved in this browser for this sheet.

How do I print a sheet of the same return address?

Replace the sample address in step 2 with your own, one line of the box for each line on the label, and leave out anything in curly braces. Braces are how the tool pulls a column from a spreadsheet; without them, the text is printed exactly as typed, on every label.

  1. In step 2, Arrange the label, delete the sample and type your name, your street address with any apartment number, then city, state and ZIP code. You do not need a spreadsheet.
  2. Set the text size and alignment. Bold first line is on, which sets your name apart; untick it for a plainer label.
  3. In step 3, check the label product matches the number on your pack. The page starts on Avery 5167.
  4. In step 4, How many labels starts at enough to fill one sheet. Type a larger number for more sheets.
  5. Download the PDF and print it at Actual size (100%), with “Fit to page” turned off. Keep the PDF if you will want the same labels again: the address you type is never saved or sent anywhere.

How many labels will I get?

One full sheet unless you change it: 80 labels on Avery 5167, 30 on Avery 5160.

More than one sheet, and part-used sheets

The number is in step 4, under How many labels. Type 160 and you get two sheets of 5167; type 100 and you get one full sheet and 20 labels on a second. The summary under the box says how many sheets the PDF will hold before you download it, and the preview pages through each one. A single PDF can hold up to 10,000 labels.

A sheet with some labels already peeled off does not have to go in the bin. Open Printing on a partly used sheet? in step 3 and click the first label still on the sheet; the picker is drawn like the sheet, so you can count across and down on the real one. Earlier positions are left blank and the printing starts there.

Which label sheet is best for return addresses?

Avery 5167 is the usual choice: 80 labels per sheet, each 1/2 inch tall and 1-3/4 inches wide, with room for three short lines.

5167 against 5160, and the other 80-up sheets

That is small. For a three-line address the tool starts the text at 7 point on 5167, and a longer name or a fourth line shrinks further to fit. If you want larger type, a company name above the street, or an address that runs long, use Avery 5160 instead: 30 per sheet at 1 inch by 2-5/8 inches, where the same three lines start at 11 point.

Avery 5267 and 8167 are in the same list in step 3 and use the same 80-per-sheet layout as 5167. If your pack has another number, look for it there first; the label template index lists every sheet with a page of its own.

Print one page on plain paper and hold it against a label sheet before a full run. The 5167 layout comes from published measurements; only the 5160 layout has been checked against real stock so far. The 5167 template page has a blank PDF for exactly this test.

How do I print different return addresses from one list?

Put one address per row in Excel or Google Sheets, add a Copies column with the number of labels each address needs, then add the file or paste the cells in step 1.

An example list, and how the copies work

This is for a household where people want their own labels, or a business with more than one branch. A list with columns named like the one below is laid out as a US address automatically, with city, state and ZIP code on one line. The Copies column is not printed; it only says how many times to repeat that row.

Name Address City State ZIP Copies
Dana Whitfield18 Harrow LanePortlandOR9720580
Sam Whitfield40 College Ave, Apt 3EugeneOR9740180
Whitfield Bakery210 Main StreetSalemOR97301160

Swipe the table sideways to see every column.

A column named Copies, Quantity or Qty is picked up by itself. Under any other name, open More options in step 2 and choose it under Copies of each row. A row with 0 copies is skipped, which is a quick way to leave someone out this time without deleting them.

Labels run on in the order of the list, so 50 of one address and 30 of the next share a sheet. To give each address sheets of its own, make every Copies number a multiple of the sheet: 80, 160 and so on on 5167, or 30, 60 on 5160, and start at the first label. In the example above that makes four sheets, one for Dana, one for Sam and two for the bakery.

In Google Sheets, select the cells including the header row, copy, and press Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac) anywhere on this page. There is no add-on to install; the Google Sheets guide has the details.

Where does a return address label go?

In the upper left corner of the front of the envelope or package. The Postal Service’s Domestic Mail Manual places a domestic return address in the upper left corner of the address side, or of the addressing area. Lay it out like any US address: your name, the street with any apartment or suite number at the end of the line, then city, state and ZIP code. The address labels guide covers line order and ZIP codes in more detail.

Can I print a full page of the same label in Word?

Yes. Word’s Labels dialog, on the Mailings tab, has a Full page of the same label option, and Microsoft documents it in Create and print labels.

The Word steps, and when this page is simpler
  1. On the Mailings tab, choose Labels.
  2. Choose Options, pick the label vendor and product number, for example 5167, and click OK.
  3. Type your address in the Address box.
  4. Select Full page of the same label.
  5. Choose Print, or New Document to check the page first.

If Word is already on your computer, that works well for one address. Several different addresses from a list, each repeated, is a mail merge in Word, with its own set of steps; the mail merge labels guide walks through them. Here it is the same tool either way: type one address, or add a list with a Copies column.

Return address label questions

How do I print return address labels at home for free?

In Print Labels From Excel, type your name and address into the label layout in step 2 without any column names in braces, choose your sheet (Avery 5167 or 5160), and download the PDF. Every label on the sheet is the same. Print it at actual size on the label sheet. It is free, there is no account, and nothing you type is uploaded.

How many return address labels are on a sheet?

Avery 5167 has 80 labels per sheet, 4 across and 20 down, each 1/2 inch by 1-3/4 inches. Avery 5160 has 30 per sheet, 3 across and 10 down, each 1 inch by 2-5/8 inches.

How do I print return address labels from Excel?

Put each address on its own row, with columns for name, street, city, state and ZIP code, and add a column named Copies with the number of labels each address needs. Add the file to Print Labels From Excel: it lays the address out and repeats each row by its Copies number.

Can I finish a sheet that already has some labels used?

Yes. In step 3 of Print Labels From Excel, open “Printing on a partly used sheet?” and click the first label that is still on the sheet. The earlier positions are left blank and printing starts there.

How do I print a full page of the same label in Word?

In Word, go to Mailings, then Labels. Choose Options to pick the label vendor and product number, type the address in the Address box, select Full page of the same label, then Print or New Document. That is the procedure in Microsoft’s Create and print labels article.
