Check the fit before you print on stock. Print the blank template on plain paper, hold it against a sheet of Avery 8160 up to the light, and check the boxes land on the die-cuts. That is worth doing with any label template on any printer — paper size, driver margins and print scaling all shift a sheet, and one sheet of plain paper is cheaper than one sheet of labels.

How 8160 differs from 5160

It does not differ geometrically. Avery states plainly that 5160, the bulk 5260 pack and 8160 share one template, and the measurements confirm it: three columns of ten, one inch by two and five-eighths, half-inch top margin. A file laid out for one prints correctly on the others.

What changes is the coating. Inkjet stock is more absorbent so wet ink sets rather than beads or smears. Laser stock is smoother and heat-stable. Running inkjet sheets through a hot laser fuser is the mistake worth avoiding — the adhesive can soften and leave residue on the drum.

Ink spread on inkjet labels

Inkjet output spreads slightly as ink wicks into the coating. For text this is invisible. It matters if you are printing barcodes, where a bar that prints a fraction wider than specified narrows the space beside it and can push a symbol out of tolerance.

If you are printing barcodes on inkjet stock and scans are unreliable, the calibration sheet lets you find the narrowest bar width your own printer resolves cleanly, rather than guessing.

Print at actual size. "Fit to page" rescales the sheet by a percent or two, which is invisible on plain paper and ruinous on labels: every row drifts further off the die-cut than the last.

Choosing between 5160, 5260 and 8160

All three are the same grid, so the decision is only ever about the printer and the pack. Pick 8160 if you are printing on an inkjet. Pick 5160 or 5260 for a laser, with 5260 being the bulk pack of the two.

If you are not sure which kind of printer you have, look at how it prints a solid black area. Laser output is uniformly matte and completely dry the instant it leaves the machine; inkjet output has a faint sheen and can still smudge under a thumb for a second or two.

Using inkjet stock in a laser printer is the combination worth avoiding outright. The fuser runs hot enough to soften an adhesive that was never specified for it, and label edges can lift and peel inside the paper path.
